The Drawing Board - Summer 2022

Summer 2022

We recently gained planning permission on a scheme which had previously been refused on landscape grounds. Broadheath Farm is a vacant farm site and involved the conversion of existing buildings and a new build to create 3no. dwellings.

The original application was refused by Cheshire East Council citing poor transition to the countryside beyond and concerns over the conversion design.

We were brought in to appraise the relationship to the countryside (landscape and visual) and thereafter to devise a scheme that worked to transition the development to the open fields beyond in a more subtle and sensitive manner. We worked with Eden Planning and Calderpeel Architects on behalf of our client.

We also made additional suggestions to repair/upgrade the existing landscape within the wider field areas (same ownership) in an ecologically sensitive manner.

PROJECT OF THE MONTH

CHESHIRE GARDEN

These before and after images demonstrate how a design for a new garden can be in keeping with and enhance a traditional property. The former garden lacked structure and character. Introducing a variety of textures through materials and planting has softened the setting of this farmhouse and created different areas to occupy.

SKETCHBOOK

The interaction of people and planting is an important part of species selection and our planting design process. This section demonstrates the sense of 'enclosure' the proposed parasol trees and hedge will give to this public open space against the large building behind. Returning the design to comfortable, human scale within the open space.

Existing trees always retain an established and mature character to a new landscape. Selectively stripping out existing boundary vegetation has highlighted the form of this Pine tree and makes a greater feature of it within the garden.
