AUTUMN 2022

The start of the tree planting season

As the weather changes with the season we are preparing on many of our jobs to start mature tree and hedgerow planting. This is bare root stock and rootball wrapped stock which has been grown in the ground at a tree nursery. The trees suffer less shock when they are moved in the winter when they are 'dormant'. They are planted over winter so they are in place when they kick back into life in spring and produce new roots. Mature trees and hedgerows really transform a space and can be bought in a variety of shapes and sizes, adding instant impact to a scheme.

Care is given to tree pit and hedge trench preparation, planting at the correct level and providing the necessary irrigation for success in the first few years after planting.

We also have access to some incredible stock from European nurseries to make a real impact from day one. Large topiary pieces and trained trees in a variety of species are available to give an instant mature character. These are particularly successful on heritage schemes.

SKETCHBOOK

The redesign of this garden in Greater Manchester responds to the uneven shape of the garden and its boundaries. Terracing of the garden and breaking up the large lawn area aims to maximise space and create different zones to use and occupy. Formal lines of trees and evergreen hedging frame these spaces and provide privacy from neighbouring gardens. A secluded seating area within a birch copse at the end of the garden gives an attractive retreat away from the house. A large terrace and outdoor room allow for entertaining and year-round enjoyment of the garden.

These before and after images demonstrate how a design for a new garden can be in keeping with and enhance a traditional property. The former garden lacked structure and character. Introducing a variety of textures through materials and planting has softened the setting of this farmhouse and created different areas to occupy.
