SUMMER 2020

Summer is well underway. Longer and warmer days mean our garden spaces come into their own.

PROJECT OF THE MONTH

A bespoke timber sunken seating area in this South Manchester garden is a unique and intimate space. Reclaimed Yorkstone paving leads you around the property. Offcuts of stone were then used to create the edging detail and soften the boundary between paving and planting. Pleached trees, instant hedging and multi-stem trees give an instant impact and texture to boundaries of the plot and add character to the seating area. Click here for more images

As the nights are longer and we spend more evenings outdoors, landscape lighting plays an important role in how a space is used and viewed from internal rooms. Feature walls and climbers can be washed with soft light to create a warm ambience. BBQ areas and seating areas can benefit from downlighters to allow for functional and safe use as well as more decorative lanterns or pendant lights to make a welcoming space. This layout shows both day and night views and how the lighting has been designed to make the most of the courtyard character.

BEFORE & AFTER

Before and After Old Hallas.jpg

Reclaimed stone walls retain an elevated garden space at this new property in rural Yorkshire. The reclaimed stone paving connects the house with the gardens and gives an established character from day one. The detailed planting scheme will enhance the terrace area and give some enclosure to the seating areas.

BEHIND THE SCENES

At Barnes Walker we are a unique team with many different skills ranging from our design studio and consultancy to our build and construction team. There are many types of horticultural based careers out there. This year the RHS Tatton Park Flower Show was held virtually and included the launch of the 'Careers in Horticulture' showcase by the Royal Horticultural Society. This includes a video by our very own Amy Collinson who was asked to talk about 'Landscape Architecture' . This is an ongoing campaign to encourage and educate people on the spectrum of work that the wider industry can offer. Click here for more information.
